Project: Consulting Services for Water Quality Analysis and Monitoring through Hand pump Replacement to Propose Standardized Specifications of Hand pump Water Supply Facilities with Considering Water Quality Under the Project for Support in National Roll-Out of Sustainable Operation and Maintenance Programme (SOMAP3)
Scope of Work:

The Government of Zambia (GRZ) through MLGHEEP implemented the Sustainable Operation and Maintenance Project for National Rural Water Supply and Sanitation (NRWSSP) in two phases (SOMAP 1 and SOMAP 2) since 2005 with a technical cooperation by JICA, with the aim of developing principles and a model to realise sustainable operation and maintenance (O&M) of water points fitted with hand pumps. GRZ further aims to nationally disseminate the SOMAP O&M model and to achieve the NRWSSP O&M Component of more than 70% operational rate of water supply facilities in rural areas.  In order to achieve this objective JICA designed the Project for National Roll-out SOMAP3 jointly with MLGHEEP for implementation from October 2011 to February 2016.

WRC was awarded the contract by Japan Techno., Ltd to conduct Consulting Services for Water Quality Analysis and Monitoring. The main aim of the water quality analysis and monitoring study was to assess relationship between water quality with high iron content and steel made downhole components of the hand pumps and whether utilization of PVC pipes and stainless steel connecting rods avoids the increment of iron content in the groundwater in boreholes.

Project: Geophysical Siting and Borehole Siting Report for the Development of Kabitaka Township and Kansanshi Mine Well fields, Zambia
Scope of Work:

WRC was commissioned to implement a borehole siting programme with the prime aim of exploring and developing groundwater resources to meet the projected future water supply demand for the Kabitaka township. Ground geophysical surveys were undertaken to locate at least twenty potential drilling sites in a new well field to develop 10 successful boreholes to meet the projected demand.WRC were commissioned to conduct a further geophysical investigation with the prime aim of exploring and developing a new well field to meet the mine’s long-term potable water supply requirements.

The overall goal of the project was to survey and site locations for drilling 10 pilot boreholes from which a well field will be developed. The survey consisted of Magnetic, Resistivity and Horizontal Loop Electromagnetic (HLEM) profiling followed by Vertical Electrical Soundings (VES).  A total of 50km of Magnetic profiling, 13km of Resistivity profiling, 42km of HLEM profiling, and 114 VES were completed. Analysis of the survey results in the context of the hydrogeological understanding of the area provided the partial selection of 10 sites for drilling new boreholes.
